About Us

Where We Are

Carrying on from the brief description on our Home Page – Wakering Yacht Club is located at Rochford on the river Roach and is in a tidal location.

We are easily reached by sea passing under the Havengore bridge at Foulness Island if entering from the Thames or via the river Crouch at Foulness Point and heading port into the River Roach and carrying on towards Rochford.

Our moorings are in a drying area, but once afloat we have one to two hours either side of high water.

WYC is the furthest navigable part of the River by all craft except Ribs

Social & Afloat Events

Social events occur quite regularly such as Birthday,

Celebratory Parties,  and Seasonal events throughout the year.

Sailing and short cruises take place on the rivers Roach – Crouch – Medway and Thames and longer cruises offshore around the southeast & East coast and inland waterways. During the summer months we have activities taking place around the Pontoon areas, including small sailing crafts and RIB’s, Paddle boards, Kayak’s and RC Boats.

Our Facilities

We have a large Club House for the use of our Members and thier Guests (See Below)

The yard adjacent to the club house has a large car park for our members and their visitors and can accommodate between 15-20 boats whilst they are worked on or stored, it also has a canteen facility for members.
We also have a separate area for small crafts and sailing boats that are being  stored.
The yard is within a secured area, with CCTV coverage.

Having a large hoist we are more than capable of lifting any boat that we may have moored on our facilities, we have a concrete slipway that gives direct access from the yard to the river. Shore Pontoons and mid-river Pontoons are available to moor up to 50 boats  which are all accessible by foot.

Power and water is available to all boats. We also have Diesel fuel available to boating members!

And a number of members who are professional in fields such as Diesel fitting and maintenance, cleaning and restoration and general engineering.

The Club House has a large main hall with bar and catering facilities, having a full well equipped kitchen with plenty of room to cater for up to 110 guests. The welfare facilities consist of Mens, Womens and Disabled toilets / washrooms with easy access.
The club has a large rear conservatory with a small stage used for music and live band functions, with a secluded garden and seating looking over the River Roach and a BBQ area leading on from this.

A Short History

The Club was first formed in 1962  the founder member was Mr. C. Bishoprick who along with a number of local residents formed the building committee. The Club Pennant was also decided at this time being a white Pelican on a blue background and the initials WYC.

A  40 foot barge was purchased and converted for use as the club house and in 1964 was opened and named “The Pelican”

This was replaced in 1972 by a much larger 72 foot Thames Lighter which again was converted and used as the club house, unfortunatly this was distroyed by fire in 1991

After this plans were made to form a more permanent club house and a location to position it. So ended up next to Sutton’s Boat Yard in Rochford where it is today.
